Surgery #3- Stage 2 Lip Repair

Check out past blogs to find our background and his previous surgeries. The blogs start at prenatal care to this post.

This surgery was on March 30, 2015 and took place during my Spring Break. I had the entire week to spend in the hospital and with him for his recovery. His last major surgery in December was to do the first stage of his lip repair. This will surgery would fully close the cleft in the lip.

The morning was the same as the first surgery. We were the first surgery, did the check in early in the morning, and then went back to pre-op. This seemed like a super easy check in because we had already been through the process several times. I do have to admit that the emotions and anxiety surrounding his third surgery were not any different though. As he was getting older, it was getting harder because he was becoming aware of what was going on.

Let's fast forward to the PACU where we went back to him after he woke up. He was looking very swollen and you could tell that he was scared when he woke up. As soon as he saw us, he was okay though.

During this stay, the amazing Children's Life specialists organized an event where the actors from Dolphin Tale #2 came to the hospital and did a question and answer session with the children. Those children who could not attend, they allowed them to watch virtually and call in with questions. We took the opportunity to go for a walk and had fun with the new stuffed Winter and the movie. We watched it when we got home.

After this surgery, he was able to drink out of a cup with a lid. This cup had a piece on the top that you pushed down and some juice or water would come out. He still did not have suction, so he could not suck on a bottle or sippy cup yet.

Stay tuned for our next blog that will describe his hard palate repair.
