Organizing Homework Time

As an educator, I have learned many different strategies and things that can help with the homework struggle and the organization struggles many children have. Having an organized procedure, locations for things, and schedules are very important for children, especially those that struggle with learning or have different exceptionalities. Children with ADHD will struggle a lot when it comes to organization and keeping track of their homework. Why is this?

Did you know that children with ADHD do not just struggle with focus and attention? They also struggle with deficits in executive functioning skills. These are skills that allow individuals to manage their thoughts, actions, and emotions in order to get things done. They also enable kids to plan, manage time, and to organize. So if you struggle with executive functioning skills getting started on things and organizing your life can be very difficult at times.

These six areas will also be affected: task initiation, time management, planning, self regulation, perseverance, and organization. So how do we help this at home?

1- Have a home and school communication binder that includes an agenda or planner, a folder for homework, and a folder for flyers that are going to and from school. The child will know where everything needs to go. Usually a child without a system that struggles with organization will just shove it in their backpack.

2- Planner- Have a planner to use for pacing of assignments, projects, and to make homework for each day. This is also a great place to write down spelling words and vocabulary.

3-Set up a designated homework area in your home and make sure this is uncluttered and organized to ensure success.

4- Everything needs its own designated place and should be organized to ensure that it is found the next time.

5- Have a password and website list for all of the online learning websites that may be required for homework or can be used for additional practice.

6- Post sight words, spelling words, or vocabulary words in the same place each week. This will ensure that your child can see the visual when they are in the area and will ensure that they will not lose them.

7- Create a check list on what needs to be done each day for any task including homework, chores, or daily tasks.

8- Create a visual schedule for what you will be doing that time of the day. This would be great for the homework time of the day to ensure that they are doing everything and to increase independence.

9- Clean out your child's backpack every weekend! These can turn into a bottomless pit and can cause stress on everyone.

10- Communicate with your child's teacher on a weekly basis or consistently. Ensure that your child is not missing anything or if the teacher is needing your help with anything.
